What is the difference between a handyman and a contractor?

If your handyman does not have or maintain a contractor license, they cannot undertake projects over $500, as per state regulations. If your project's total labor and material cost is below this threshold, it qualifies as a repairperson project. Otherwise, it falls into the contractor category. To assess the value of your project, it's advisable to get estimates from three different service providers at the project site.

What is the difference between a Handyman and a Contractor?

A good place to start is the total value of your project’s labor and materials.. If the value of the maintenance worker project is $499.00 or less, it qualifies as a Handyman project. Conversely, if the value of the maintenance worker project reaches $500.00 or more, this classification changes to a contractor project.

How to determine the value of the handyman project: Follow the rule of thumb and contact three different maintenance worker service providers regarding the work to be done. Then, receive three different written and/or verbal estimates. Preferably, do this at the project site with your local handyman service provider.

Who is best for your project: Keep in mind your local service worker may be skilled in many different trades of work. Conversely, the CSLB may license your local contractor only in one trade of work. Each individually issued contractor’s license has its own restrictions on labor performed under his or her license classification. Therefore, regardless of the skill level claimed by the service provider, don’t hire a plumbing contractor to do electrical work unless they are authorized to perform both trades, as a general B contractor would be.
